Toyco Sound Train Series E235 Yamanote Line (30 Station Ver.), Japanese Station Announcements
Product Description
Toyco Sound Train Series E235 Yamanote Line (30 Station Ver.) is a friction-powered toy of the E235 series train on Tokyo's Yamanote Line, made by Toyco Ltd. (株式会社トイコー) of Sumida, Tokyo. Toyco's product name is 「サウンドトレイン E235系 山手線(30駅 Ver.)」 (Toyco item no. 100026). It is a toy, and Toyco gives no scale.
The roof has four numbered sound buttons. Toyco's box lists what each one plays:
- Button 1: each press announces the next Yamanote Line station name, one station at a time, in inner-loop (内回り) order. Toyco says all 30 stations are announced, Takanawa Gateway included.
- Button 2: the inner-loop departure melody 「スイートコール」 (Sweet Call), then the announcement 「ドアが閉まります、ご注意ください」 ("The doors are closing. Please be careful.").
- Button 3: the outer-loop (外回り) departure melody 「キッズステーション」 (Kids Station), then the same door-closing announcement.
- Button 4: a running sound.
Toyco says the station announcements are its own original recordings (「トイコーオリジナル音声」) by the narrator 三浦七緒子 (Miura), who Toyco says voices the announcements on the real trains. Toyco names Sweet Call and Kids Station as departure melodies of Takanawa Gateway Station. All announcements are in Japanese. Toyco lists no English announcements.
Pressing a sound button lights the headlights. A slide lever opens and closes the doors, and a coupler is fitted at the rear (Toyco does not say which other toys it couples with). A volume button steps through high, medium and low. Toyco describes the exterior and interior as reproduced in detail (「外観・車内を細部までリアルに再現」), and its product page suggests using the toy to learn the Yamanote Line station names.
Toyco calls this version a "sound renewal" (「サウンドリニューアル!」). Toyco also made an earlier E235 Yamanote Line Sound Train without the 「30駅 Ver.」 mark. That one has a different set of sounds and came with demonstration batteries. This listing is the 30駅 Ver., JAN 4962603007960.
The box carries the line 「JR東日本商品化許諾済」 (JR East merchandising licence granted), with the credits "Licensed by (株)スイッチ 作曲:福嶋尚哉" (composer: 福嶋尚哉) and 「音声協力:株式会社マック・ミック 三浦七緒子」 (voice cooperation: 株式会社マック・ミック, 三浦七緒子).

How to Use
Taking it out of the box: the train is fixed to the bottom of the inner card with a screw. Turn the screw to free the train. Toyco says the screw is only there to hold the toy in place and could be swallowed, so throw it away as soon as you remove it.
Batteries: Toyco says a parent or guardian must always fit and change the batteries. To open the battery cover, press its release button with a pointed object such as a toothpick and, while holding it down, slide the cover in the direction of the arrow. Toyco made the release hole deep on purpose so that the cover does not open easily. Put in the 2 AA batteries with + and - the right way round, then slide the cover back to close it.
Sounds: press buttons 1 to 4 on the roof. Button 1 moves on one station around the loop with each press. To change the volume, press the volume button with a toothpick or similar pointed object; it changes in the order high, medium, low.
Doors and running: slide the lever to open and close the doors. To run the train, press its wheels against the floor and slide it forward to build up momentum, then let go and it runs forward.
Toyco's warning, printed on the box (translated): "To parents: please be sure to read this. Contains small parts. They can be swallowed or cause choking, so never give this toy to a child under 3."
Toyco's cautions (translated): Do not bang or throw the toy. Keep fingers and hair away from the wheels. Do not use it if it is damaged. Do not use it close to the ear; misuse may damage hearing. Do not look into the headlights for a long time; it may hurt the eyes. Do not store it touching PVC balls for a long time; the contact area may melt and paint may transfer. Do not put it in the mouth, stand on it, or bring it near fire. Misusing batteries can cause heat, bursting or leakage: never use rechargeable batteries; do not mix old and new batteries or different kinds of batteries; fit + and - correctly; do not short-circuit, charge, take apart, heat or burn the batteries. If battery fluid gets into the eyes, rinse at once with plenty of water and consult a doctor; if it gets on skin or clothes, wash it off with water. When disposing of it, follow your local authority's waste instructions.
Toyco notes that the package photos may differ from the product and that specifications may change without notice.
