Set against the backdrop of mid-20th-century China, the film follows Puyi from his privileged yet confined childhood in the Forbidden City through the fall of Manchukuo, his captivity after World War II, and his later years in the newly formed People’s Republic of China.

Beginning in 1950 in the city of Harbin, where former Chinese war criminals are being released from Soviet detention, a man attempts suicide in a crowded station. He is revealed to be Puyi, the last emperor of China. Through his memories, the film traces his rise and fall, exploring themes of identity, power, guilt, and redemption, crafting a grand historical drama that remains a landmark of world cinema.
