The long-awaited "Tokyo Godfathers" is the third installment in our publication of Satoshi Kon storyboards, following "Paprika" in 2017 and "Millennium Actress" this spring. The story revolves around three homeless individuals in Shinjuku, Tokyo: Gin-chan, a former bicycle racer; Hana-chan, a former drag queen; and Miyuki, a runaway girl. Together, they embark on a nighttime adventure through the Christmas streets to find the parents of a baby they discovered in a garbage dumpster.
Director Satoshi Kon, renowned for works like "Perfect Blue," "Millennium Actress," and "Paprika," is celebrated for his unique storytelling that often blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. However, in "Tokyo Godfathers," released in his 40th year, Kon takes a different approach. This film, which combines elements of American comedies from the 1930s and 40s, rakugo tales, and traditional Christmas stories, is both orthodox and experimental. It has garnered numerous awards and is considered a masterpiece with a less animated flavor.
