History of Ueno Fugetsudo
Ueno Fugetsudo's history dates back to 1747 when the founder, Kisuke Osumi, ventured to Edo (now Tokyo). With the philosophy of creating joy through their products, the confectionery store quickly gained favor, eventually earning the esteemed name "Fugetsudo" from Lord Matsudaira Sadanobu. Entering the Meiji era, the fifth-generation, Shozaburo Osumi, embraced the modernization of Ueno and began selling Western-style sweets. Upholding the family's legacy of spirit and skill, Ueno Fugetsudo continues to deliver the joy of delicious confections through the ages, aspiring to be a confectionery that enjoys change and perpetuates new culture.
The Birth of Gaufre
The Gaufre wafer was born in 1929, created by the Fugetsudo family in Tokyo. At a time when sweet Japanese confections made with a large amount of sugar were considered superior, the introduction of Gaufre, with its crisp texture and refined sweetness, was a refreshing surprise that was warmly received and highly acclaimed.
