About the Craftsman

Toko Kakinuma, a traditional craftsman, was born in Arakawa-ku, Tokyo in 1948. He studied under his father, Toko Kakinuma I, in 1974 and has since devoted himself to the production of Edo Mokumegome dolls. He has learned unique techniques such as inlaying mother-of-pearl inlays and colored two-layered Mokumegome dolls, and strives to improve his skills. He has built a new Toko brand with a style of creating innovative works, always keeping an eye on the "now" of the times.

About Mokumegome Technique

Mokumegomi is a technique of carving a narrow groove in the folds of a costume or the border of a piece of cloth, and "kimekomi" the cloth there. The origin of Mokumegome originated in Kyoto about 270 years ago during the Genbun period (1736-41), and the technique of making dolls was introduced to Edo (present-day Tokyo), giving birth to the Edo Mokumegome dolls.

About Kakinuma Dolls

Kakinuma dolls, made using the traditional Edo Mokumegome technique, are known for their exquisite craftsmanship. The craftsman continues to innovate with new creations such as photo frames, trays, and beckoning cats. He dreams of a day when the word "KIMEKOMI" will be used commonly by people all over the world.
