- Sanzo Wada (1883-1967), Japanese artist, costume designer, and color researcher. In 1927 he founded the Japan Standard Color Association and released Japan's first "Japan Standard Color Card" of 500 colors; the organization was later reorganized into the Japan Color Research Institute, which still exists today. Wada received the 1954 Academy Award for Best Costume Design for "Gate of Hell" and was recognized by the Japanese government as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1958.
