KATO's smallest steam locomotive, the C12, has been meticulously reproduced in its compact form. This model represents the steam locomotive as it appeared around 1970, near the end of its operational life. The C12 is designed to navigate small layouts and tight spaces, capable of passing through R150 small radius curves. It features a coreless motor with a flywheel, ensuring excellent low-speed running performance, making it ideal for local lines.

The locomotive's leading, driving, and driven wheels have been updated to the latest specifications, with the spokes removed for a more realistic appearance. The air action tubes are pre-printed with copper tubes, and there is no runboard white line. Both front and rear lights are operational in the direction of travel, though there is no off switch. The front light is an LP42, equipped with an ATS generator, and the sanding pipe is reproduced as the early type for both front and rear.

The model includes a selectable number plate with car numbers 42, 46, 51, and 67. For enhanced realism, replacement knuckle couplers (rear) are provided. Additionally, Arnold couplers and knuckle couplers for back-up operation are included, allowing for easy reproduction of back-up operations, a notable feature of tank locomotives.
