Ryo Fukui was a renowned Japanese jazz pianist, born in 1948 in Biratori, Hokkaido. He released his debut album, Scenery, in 1976 and was primarily based in Sapporo. Fukui was known for his captivating performances, characterized by beautiful original melodies and powerful, swing-filled bebop style. He played regularly at the Slowboat jazz club, where he enchanted many fans with his music.
In 2012, Fukui made history by becoming the first jazz pianist to receive the Sapporo Culture Encouragement Award. His life and musical journey came to an end on March 15, 2016.
